நாளொரு பக்கம் 36

நாளொரு பக்கம் 36

Tuesday, the 31th March 2015
There are stars whose radiance is visible on Earth though they have long been extinct. There are people whose brilliance continues to light the world though they are no longer among the living. These lights are particularly bright when the night is dark. They light the way for humankind.
-Hannah Szenes(1921-1944): poet, playwright, and paratrooper
Prophecy is, it seems, hanging in the air, like a fragrance that stays with you, unseen. Hannah was a legend in her own life-time, spanning a mere two decades and three years. Her poetic lines,
“ My God, My God, I pray that these things never end,
The sand and the sea,
The rustle of the waters,
Lightning of the Heavens,...”
remain embedded in the conscience of Israel, whose National Heroine, she is. She was parachuted into Yugoslavia by the British army, with 36 others during World War II to rescue the Hungarian Jews bound for the German death camp at Auschwitz. Arrested and tortured, she adamantly refused to divulge the details of her mission. She was executed by the firing squad.
What she said , she lived. She lit the way for humankind.
