“To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
To hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And Eternity in an hour.”
  • - From “Auguries of Innocence” by William Blake

William Blake is not merely re-readable; he is refreshingly with us all the time.  So mystical are his writings that we think that we grasped his simple words; it is an illusion. We miss the wood for the trees and unless we re-read again and again, we miss the trees also! There are no simple answers and no single answer in Blake. This is true of Scriptures also.

The poem is a longer one and every line is fragrant. One could hardly do justice to these four lines in one page; one could write many books on each line.
To see a world in a grain of sand...

Try it. So true it is. Whatever we behold, we see what our minds wish to see. A bewitching beauty passes by. One is physically attracted to her like a magnet. The other sees Divinity in her presence.  The third person, an elderly lady visualizes her daughter in law in her! The Beauty, Sirs, lies in the eyes of the beholder. So, one could , by turning his mind on Universal Love can visualize it in a ‘grain of sand.  And, the wild flower, by its sheer beauty and fragrance can turn your head and the ecstasy is the Gateway to the very Heaven. True. One can hold the very Infinity in own hand by the simple act of willing it. It is something akin to, I dare say, Nirvikalpa Samadhi.

To imprison Eternity into in hour is something of a tall order. Blake wrote these lines in 1803 and they saw print after seven decades. Much later, very much later, Einstein’s Relativity, Stephen Hawking’s approach to Time and the Hadron Collider seem to be on the way to grasp his mystical saying. I know this is incomplete. It is better to open the Idea, instead of wallowing in self-pity.
